Seattle School District

School Levies Election
February 9

Chief Sealth Construction

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is committed to ensuring an excellent education for every student. The five-year strategic plan, Excellence for All, sets out a plan to raise achievement for all students, retain and attract great teachers, and increase efficiency. To help realize district goals, students, teachers and community members rely on Seattle voter support of SPS levies for both operations and capital projects.

There are two replacement levy measures on the February 9, 2010, ballot - a Capital Levy called Buildings, Technology and Academics III (BTA III) and an Operations Levy. For detailed information about both levies, please refer to our Levy Information brochure.

Capital Levies and Bonds provide the funds to renew and replace aging buildings with modern and efficient facilities, including projects that improve health and safety for students and staff. Capital levy and bond funds are also used for improvements in athletic fields, classrooms, technology and mechanical equipment. The six-year BTA levies alternate with the six-year Building Excellence (BEX) capital program levy or bond measures.

Operations Levies support core SPS programs by providing nearly 25 percent of the funds for the District's day-to-day operating expenses. These funds help pay for teachers, instructional assistants, full-day kindergarten, sixth period at high school, student activities such as drama, music and athletics, and security and student transportation. More information on the upcoming levies is available at www.seattleschools.org.

Denny Topping Off Ceremony - December 23rd, 2009

Denny Topping Off Celebration - Steel construction workers hoist the final beam into place for the new Denny International Middle School, December 23rd, 2009.

On December 23rd, 2009, the construction team for the new Denny School celebrated the "topping off” of the new Denny School building. A Topping Off ceremony is a tradition within the construction industry that marks the moment when the highest structural point in a building's construction is attained. To celebrate this event, a steel beam, decorated with the traditional topping off elements - a United States Flag and an evergreen tree - was signed and hoisted into place. The placement of a tree during the ceremony symbolizes that the building project has reached its peak successfully and that the occupants of the building will also experience success at completion. The new Denny International Middle School is scheduled to open in 2011.
